What's the difference between crushed pepper and whole peppercorns? +

Whole peppercorns are the intact dried berry — you grind them yourself for maximum freshness. Crushed pepper (also called cracked pepper) is peppercorns that have been partially broken — more surface area means faster flavor loss than whole, but more texture than fine ground.
